Wesley Brown Field House
Location: Annapolis, Maryland
Owner: U.S. Naval Academy
In 2012, SEA conducted an energy audit for the Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis, MD. The Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square foot multi-function athletic facility that serves as the home for the men’s and women’s track & field programs, the primary location for Navy volleyball matches and an indoor practice facility for the football and lacrosse teams.
The field house has a full-length, 76,000 square foot, retractable Magic Carpet Astro Turf football field. When the field is retracted, students can then use the 200-meter AstroTurf track with a Mondo track surface and hydraulically-controlled banked curves and three permanent basketball courts. In four to six hours, the indoor track-and-field can be changed to an indoor football practice field, including target goalposts for placekicking practice.
The weight room is one of three “strength and conditioning facilities” at the academy. With 6,500 square feet, it serves the members of the following teams: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track, golf, sprint football, volleyball, water polo, and women’s lacrosse.
This scope of work supports the Department of the Navy’s Energy Assessment program. The program has two main objectives: first, identify energy efficiency opportunities with benefits, costs and savings. This is to prioritize all identified opportunities for funding and implementation. Second, comply with Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of December 2007.
Project requirements included:
- Provide commissioning recommendations
- Identify energy and water conservation opportunities
- Examine all significant energy and water-using systems
- Investigate building-level renewable energy opportunities
- Identify building system repairs, replacements and modifications
