Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bethesda, is the home of the largest medical complex in the Department of Defense, The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The state-of-the-art Medical Center provides care to the military community with expertise in the caring of critically wounded Service Members. In 2012, Walter Reed merged with the National Naval Medical Center. The new facility involved extensive construction and renovation projects to accommodate the growing number of services and patients. The new facility now includes a number of professional buildings that provide support to all areas of patient care, medical research and education.
The tower of Building 1 establishes the most prominent edifice and is a historical landmark on the WRNMMC Facility in Bethesda. Original construction took place in 1940 and the building serves as home to base dental offices/clinics and support staff. This building is among 17 facilities audited totaling approximately 2,804,178 Sq. ft.
SEA conducted energy and water evaluations which included audits of the facilities’ energy and water systems. This project is an effort to meet client goals and to identify potential future projects.
SEA recommended that the the upgraded controls system be fully commissioned to realize the full potential of the upgrades and institute new occupied and unoccupied setpoint parameters. SEA also identified potential energy and/or water savings opportunities that will substantially reduce the buildings operating expenses. Solutions were identified in the following areas: HVAC, water, energy, lighting and building envelope.Overall, SEA recommended a total of 23 energy conservation measures (ECMs).
