Marshall Space Flight Center Compressed Air Plant

Energy Assessment

Location: Huntsville, AL
Owner: Marshall Space Flight Center

A comprehensive energy assessment was performed at Marshall Space Flight Center Building 4607 in 2010. This building houses several high and low pressure air compressors in a central location providing compressed air for various uses to multiple buildings on the NASA MSFC campus. SEA made recommendations on multiple systems to save approximately 20% of the building’s total energy consumption.

Statement of Work:

List all equipment involved in compressed air production, trend energy consumption for the building for the previous year, determine energy conservation measures (ECMs) where viable.

Some energy conservation measures recommended included:

  • Installing integrated controllers for low and high pressure air compressors
  • Use of hot compressed air for low and high pressure dryer purging
  • Installation of variable speed drives on cooling tower pumps
