Energy and Water Assessment
Location: NSA Crane
Owner: U.S. Navy
In 2011 Sain Engineering Associates (SEA) performed a comprehensive energy audit of 54 buildings representing approximately 1,499,162 sq. ft. at Naval Support Activity base Crane (NSA Crane). The primary purpose of the audit was to describe, measure, and identify as many energy conservation measures (ECMs) as could be economically implemented. SEA identified 17 ECMs with an estimated savings of $7,065,167 per year.
During this audit, SEA was asked to evaluate a study of the potential redevelopment of a hydroelectric dam near the base. SEA performed fluid flow analysis, power generation calculations and cost savings calculations in order to evaluate the study’s recommendations. SEA recommended using smaller systems of water turbines in order to decrease the simple payback from 14.8 years to 9.8 years (a 33.8% decrease).
