Energy and Water Assessment
Location: NSA Crane
Owner: U.S. Navy
Sain Engineering Associates, Inc. was contracted to perform an ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit at NSA Crane in Crane, Indiana. Part of the energy assessment included an energy and water analysis of a manufacturing facility located on site. Building 41 is used for offices and laboratory space for working on large and small assemblies and has a large shipping and receiving area.
Building 41 has multiple tenants with different space requirements for each. The various space types need differing amounts of outside air, light levels, temperature ranges, and electrical capacities depending on their
As part of the effort, facility operation information, utility data, operation and maintenance (O&M) procedures, and primary energy consumers were evaluated. Site personnel provided a facility overview, which included meter data where available, square footage, facility layout drawings, and general information on the operation and performance of the facilities.
Among the energy conservation measures (ECMs) analyzed by SEA was a recommendation to upgrade DDC programs to allow HVAC systems to run more effectively by reducing run time as well as excess temperature settings.
There was also a recommendation for radiant heating in bay environments as a means of mitigating heat loss through open doors and windows while providing a more comfortable heating option.
Some of the more advantageous ECMs involved replacing older water fixtures with their low-flow counterparts as well as upgrading some of the lighting systems. These replacements were found to have quick paybacks, ranging from 1 to 1 ½ years. Other ECMs included a steam and condensate assessment, a compressed air study, and destratification fans.
